Frankly, I think everyone’s answer to this topic will be different. Obviously. So, here’s the one book I force my friends to read encourage my friends to try.
“Gaudy Night” by Dorothy L. Sayers. This story has everything I love. Romance, literary references, a very cool mystery and a happy ending. The language is rich and the setting is phenomenal. I adore Sayers and this is the best of them all. Because of this book, I delved into metaphysical poetry, English history and political satire. Sayers has a way, in this book, of making the mundane and commonplace, extrodinary and interesting. I fell in love with the word “lacrymose” and discovered that the “formula” for a mystery/suspense could be deviated from and still be entertaining.
So, now you know. I want to be buried with my ragged, worn copy of this book. I love it.
