This week we’re talking about the best parts of summer. From summer memories to just plain old summer fun.
For me, Labor Day (or Labour Day as Dayna spells it–because it’s a totally different holiday if you add the “u”) signals the end of summer. Maybe not the end of the hot whether, but school kicks off and all my students come in for the Fall semester. I teach college freshman, so I get the wet behind the ears people who have never tried college before (usually), and they’re all excited and terrified and trying to let neither show when they talk to people. It’s the end of summer and the beginning of fall for me. Right there, summer’s over.
My favorite part of summer has always been the Fourth of July. My family was big on having an enormous cookout with awesome barbecue. My dad and uncles would sit next to the grill with beer and debate politics and the best way to marinate beef. The rest of us were in the pool. Then night came and it all got way more exciting. The whole neighborhood would roll out and bring the fireworks we’d bought. A huge neighborhood display would light up the night. Then those who felt like it could climb the big hill behind the junior high and watch three different fireworks display from towns along the Delta. It was also a great time to escape the parents and neck with cute boys. Not that I’d know anything about that, but it really is all about the fireworks on the Fourth. No wonder I love that holiday.
And here’s the video that says it all for me. Only I was a girl in California, not a boy in Michigan.
