My mother and father gifted me with a love for the written word very early. My earliest memories are of sitting on my father’s lap, trying to follow the words as he read aloud. Playing the “read the sign” game as we drove.
When I was older, there was never a shortage of books to read around the house. And many a joke is made at my expense about my younger Christmas requests. When I was 8 I asked for the full works of Shakespeare. At 9 I wanted a book of Rod McKuen poetry and a single rose (yes…weird.)
I wrote my first poem around that time. But I remember it was my mother who wrote the stories. Amazing scripts, and epic journal entries about her various adventures. I was, and still am, in awe of her talent. I guess it isnt too surprising than that my daydreams and weird imaginings eventually found their way onto the page.
A few years ago for my birthday-my mother sent me a little note. I thought I would share it with you now as I begin this new year. Older, hopefully wiser, grateful for the gifts I’ve been given by my family.
The first full moon of that year wore a tail like a comet
A shimmering, vibrant hitchhiker, dancing light
A treasure for the waiting world below.
Daughter of the stars, she burst forth into the world
A nova, rearranging, forever altering
The patterns of our lives and of our souls
All celestial bodies must battle to exist in the universe
Steering around debris, jousting with meteors
And so she did, with courage and love
With every enemy defeated, she became stronger
More spiritual, wiser and more alive
Until one day the war was won.
She shines so brightly now that none dare defy her.
She has emerged a force to be reckoned with
The world is the richer for it.
And I am blessed above all
For she was born of me
My gift My daughter My love
Rachel Grace; Seer, Songstress, Sage, Sympathetic heart
Sky maiden, Earth mother, Rock warrior, Nymph
Happy Birthday
I love you

RG - that is a gift beyond measure, and you are right - time with our families and those we love is more important than all the rest. Treasure it, and her.
