What Do YOU Think?

By Jennifer Leeland | November 11, 2007

So over at my blog I’ve described my heroines and heroes that I’ve been writing. Two of the heroines and two of the heroes are in sequels to
“Heart Of The Storm”
that haven’t been contracted yet. I actually enjoyed it. Talking about my characters gives them breath and life.

But it’s risky.

What if I talk about these characters and nothing happens? What if no one wants to read about my twisted heroes? What if—

This is the insanity that is writing. There’s a definite pull toward considering “What sells” and “Where will THIS fit!”. Often, my stories don’t do what I tell them to. I may read a fabulous article about how vampires and shapeshifters are the new thing, but since I can’t write them, I can’t make my characters “become” them. And if they’re not nasty, they’re not.

It’s the “What ifs-” that can KILL inspiration for me. Right now, I’m writing sequels to a book that I STILL love. It’s wonderful and I love it.

What do you think? Do the “What ifs–” keep you from writing “that book” or “that way”? As a reader, do you wonder if a writer was asked to “heat it up”? Can you tell?

I know what you mean-I am kind of going through that with my current WIP-its not what you would expect to happen as a reader-but I have to just write it and hope for the best. lol
