That ability to speak coherently on a wide variety of topics? To be the hostess with the mostess? Gone, baby, gone. I’ve been to a few parties recently and I realized I was speaking a different language. A language all of you understand-writer-ese.
I was asked about my books by interested family and friends-and I of course began to tell them all in detail what was going on, discussing conferences etc etc.
I realized later that they most likely hadnt wanted so much information. A superficial inquiry like- “How are you?” To which you are supposed to reply “Fine. Thanks for asking! How are you?” But did I notice that social nuance? No. If I wasnt talking about my diva friends or my writing-I couldnt think of anything else to say.
There was a time when I could talk for hours on any manner of subject: politics, religion, history-now I am just counting the hours until I can get back and write on my WIP, or talk to all of you.
I think I might actually be…gasp…boring
Say it ain’t so.
Has this happened to any of you? Do you get so caught up in the online community and your writing that you lose the ability to communicate about anything else?
Please say yes. Lie if you have to.

Oh I do this all the time! My husband is scared to take me anywhere anymore LOL! The funny thing is my friends love to get me going because they say my whole personality changes. I somehow get more excited and they can see how much I love writing. At least that’s something.

The hardest thing for me is talking g-rated while out in public. I’m used to talking to you people all day and you are all a dirty bunch! Makes it hard to transition into a world where four-letter words are not the norm.

It hasn’t happened to me because I have a day job…I fear what might happen to my already feeble social skills if I ever write full time.

Feist, I have the same problem lol!
Yeah, I’m not so good socially anymore with non-writers.

R.G., I have to say I feel the same way. If people don’t want to talk about books, then adios amigo! LOL.
Loved your post, I’m still chuckling…!

I’m like Crystal. That hasn’t happened to me yet either since I work with adults and kids all day. But I do love having friends in “both” worlds though. And all my “friends” at work know that I write and ask me about it occasionally. But I have to censure (LOL) them sometimes because of the nature of my writing. Can’t talk about that around the kiddos. LOL!
