Some people equate certain scents with memories. Vanilla, fresh bread, Grandma’s cookies. For me its music. Growing up in my house, there was always music. Saturday cleaning to Camelot…Sunday veg day to Gordon Lightfoot and Harry Chapin. My mother would put The Bear Necessities on our giant 8 track of an answering machine. We even thought musically. My mother, sister and I would randomly break into Stop In the Name of Love at a crosswalk, road trips invariably ended in songs from Paint Your Wagon “I was born under a wanderin’ star” and Oklahoma. It surprised no one we knew if at any time they heard us belt out a few lines from Rocky Horror Picture Show “It’s just a jump to the left”… even a little Sweet Charity “Hey Big Spender”
Anyway, I’ve been unusually sleepy the last few days. Family visits and hormones lol. And one song keeps running through my head. We always sang it-a funny song performed by the late great Madeline Kahn. The title explains it all…I’m Tired. What are some of your musical memories?

My dad raised me on James Taylor, so no matter what anyone says, I will be a huge fan of his until the day I die.
Plus, on road trips, my parents used to play Ray Stevens songs.

Oh absolutely. A week wouldnt go by without a little Sweet Baby James. Great songs.

I heart James Taylor. My dad was a country music fan — Hee Haw was his favorite show, so there’s a part of me that can really appreciate old-time country music.
But really, Queen is more my speed. The theatricality of it appeals to me. Oh, and ABBA.

Sela-Queen, check. Abba, check!
lol
And Hee Haw-isnt that where that song came from-”Gloom, Despair and Agony on Me?…If it werent for bad luck I’d have no luck at all…” We sing that a lot.

So, RG, why are you tired?
We always had music around. Rock and Roll, musicals, disney movies, church, music, music, music. All the time. I’m doing the same for my own kids today, I hope. Next will be the lessons. Piano, drums, guitar, trumpet…

I threaten my children with the Gloom song all the time. Every time they start whining, I tell them, “You better stop or I’ll have to sing the song!” LOL At least they stop whining!

Sela-when I was a teen and started thinking that maybe singing everywhere wasnt cool {that phase didnt last long lol} I clearly recall driving in the car with my mom-seeing cute older boys at a stoplight and slumping in the seat as my mother grabbed a hairbrush and turned up the volume-singing whatever was on the radio at the top of her lungs. The more I whispered for her to stop, the louder she got. At 13 I was mortified-now I serenade people from my car. I guess the moral is-keep singing-they’ll join you soon. LOL

I LOVE Madeline Kahn! Thanks for posting that!

There are a few songs that I can hear and they’ll remind me of something.
Unfortunately, I can’t think of any of the songs at the moment, and I can never remember what the songs are trying to remind me of. It’s really annoying, actually. It’s like deja vu, only without the vu.

One of my favorite memories is of my brother, sister and I standing around the living room belting out “Joy to the World”/Three Dog Knight while my dad played on the piano. We sang it so much that up until my brother hit high school, he thought my dad wrote that song.

Oh, this is one of my favorite topics.
When I was a kid, my Dad LOVED The Sons Of The Pioneers. I grew up on (and still love) Nat King Cole, Jo Stafford, and Bing Crosby.
My poor kids. They’re going to remember singing Linkin Park and Clint Black.

Feisty-me too
Lanie-just the vu? LOL
Julie-thats a great story
Jen-BING!!! Thats a memory that belongs to my grandfather. He could whistle just like Bing-we used to sit by his record player and listen to Bing and the Andrew Sisters. Man I miss him.

Hmmmm….my earliest music memories were of my grandfather playing the piano. Always church music though…but I loved to hear him sing and play. I took piano lessons when I was younger. Couldn’t play a darn think now if you asked me now though. LOL
