Non writing related.

By Rowan Larke | August 31, 2007

Sometimes I feel like there is NOTHING in the world that is ‘non writing related’. Seriously, I take a bath, and start analyzing the sound of the water, the feel of it…so I can write about it more realistically. I find myself taking notes on what my kids have said, in case I ever decide to include ‘kid dialogue’ in one of my books.

And yet, I’ve noticed something this month. The better my Real Life is…the less I want to write. Not that the characters aren’t still needy (and vocal) or that I don’t want to be a writer…but I just don’t want to take a break from Real Life to deal with them. This also, unfortunately, is true about the business of writing. There are times when I’m so distracted by reviews, royalties, releases and the chaos which is epublishing to bother writing.

And this month has had a lot of real life and business going on for me. However, I’ve discovered my kids are cool people, my husband is amazing, and Real Life isn’t all that bad…

So I’m just curious…what do you do that is Non Writing Related? And do you sometimes need to be reminded that there are such things?

Funny I was just feeling this way today. It’s a three day weekend and really I’d rather have weekend long water fights with my kids than to chain myself to a computer.

I guess that’s what I do that’s non-writing related. I remind myself why I wanted my little hellions. I call my friends and just chill without mayhem or drama to clean up. I act like I’m really interested in doing my homework.

My real life isn’t too bad right now and why complicate it with characters whose life is in shambles. I still love writing but even I know when to step away from it.

Sometimes I resent it when non-writing related stuff intrudes. AND the thrill of release dates, chats and so on just doesn’t mean very much to my six year old. LOL.
But there are times when those things need my undivided attention. Those are the times I check out and don’t think about the writing, promotion or anything else.
And I think everyone does it.

I have no idea what you mean by Not writing related. There is nothing not related, only interruptions to it.

    Sleeping
    Eating
    Feeding the zoo

    Interruptions.

Okay, I probably need an intervention too. :)
