Thirteen Plots I Should Stay Away From

1. Secret babies. Could be fun if the secret baby daddy was the bad guy who had an epiphany and reformed. Been done? No doubt.

2. Secret babies with sheik, Greek tycoon, Italian plyaboy daddies et al.

3. Beta males. Really. What’s the point?

4. Blackmailed into marriage secretaries/nannies/personal assitants. Oh, the possibilities.

5. Rich girl who loses it all scrounging her way back to the top. Scarlett anyone?? As God is my witness…

6. Twenty-five year old virgins.

7. Ok, 18 year old virgin takes holy orders and decides she really isn’t cut out for this celibacy thing.

8. Regency. Unless the hero is a 900 hundred year old vampire Duke who leads a charge at Waterloo. Hmm, that one has possibilities.

9. Wimpy, passive aggresive heroines who need a hero to fix their lives. Ya know, I could maybe work with this one too.

10. Life weary ancient vamps who suddenly decide life might be worth living when the right piece of a$$ comes along.

11. Missionary sex. Well come on. Y’all know what I write.

12. Girl spends her life in love with the boy next door but he doesn’t see her as the love of his life until she does the duckling-swan routine. By that point he has to steal her from a completely nice guy because he knows she’s the one

13. I can’t think of any more. Isn’t this enough lol??

Oh! How could I forget it! And I just wrote one of those! Lmao!!

Actually, I know some 30 and even 40 year old virgins. Believe it or don’t.

    #12.

    Nuff said, really.

    Great list, Lori.

    Yes. Great list.

LMAO, Lori. I have to say that I got frustrated with all my work and sat down and wrote a book about a woman who gets shot, wakes up, has amnesia and a fiance she can’t remember. LOL.
AND she’s adopted, looking for her real mother, and is a secret baby herself.
Can you say EVERY annoying plot device in one story. It was fun. I laughed the whole time.
Needless to say, it’s just going sit there as a warning to me.

Babe-I’m with ya on the virgin thing. In my world it is not at all unusual.

Great list Lori-definitely agree with most of those :)

I saw #2 and almost died… I can’t stand that plot! I’ve seen so many of the HQN books with it.

Personally I hate the assumption that a girl CAN’T be a virgin if she’s over the age of 21. My best friend was a virgin until she was 31.

    And #12…. Just… ’nuff said. :D

    Re: the virgin thing…

I don’t think it’s completely unrealistic; I know a couple people who are in their 30s or older and virgins. At the same point, it’s still very rare, and if your character is an older virgin, there ought be a plausible reason for it. ;)

About the virgin thing…I didn’t say they were plausible or not, just that I don’t read them and hadn’t ever really planned on writing one lol. :D

So many plots that are overdone…lol. It’s always nice to find someone who writes something a little different, or adds a twist to the same old. ;)

What? No reunions? You know, ugly duckling moves away and comes home for will reading/school reunion/dying relative/circus is in town, then winds up panting after the Most Popular Guy or Girl?

Great list! The funny thing is, I write catagory. And I refuse to write any of these. I’m not sure if that will kill my chances or not!

I’ve written #2 and #4. In fact, many of my heroes are betas. Sorry… :(

I’m with you Kate, I like my beta’s too. I could deal with an alpha if the heroine is just as alpha as he is. I can’t stand it when the hero is alpha and the heroine is a wuss. Makes me toss the book against the wall.

Sadly, I am a sucker for the ugly duckling/swan stories AND boy next door finally realizes she is the one. Yeah…”She’s All That” was one of my faves. *sigh*

Hm. The book I have coming out in July has a beta male. I disagree with #3.
