Valentine’s Day for Single Chicks

By Crystal Jordan | February 12, 2007

For single women like me, Valentine’s Day (aka the day of lurrrrrve) has a little bit of the WHY GOD WHY?? about it. We don’t get flowers, chocolate, candy, or candle lit dinners. We don’t even have the possibility of such things. We have no significant other to make hints to about what we want. Yeah, it also means we’re free of expectations. I get that, but still…I love flowers.

The fun part is that I always get together with my single friends and throw an Anti-Valentine’s Day dinner. Food, margaritas, and down-with-men movies such as Kill Bill. Nice!

How does this relate to writing? I’m a romance writer who throws anti-romance holiday parties. It seems kind of wrong and twisted. Ah, well. C’est la vie. Or perhaps, C’est la guerre.

So, what’s everyone doing for V-Day? Anything fun or incredibly romantic?

Okay, and this picture might wig some people out, but it almost made me snort oatmeal out my nose when I saw it (OW!). I just had to have it.

Valentine’s Day sucks for me, too. Superhubby is awesome wonderful incredible…but V-day just never lives up to the hype. If he buys me A rose, someone I know gets a dozen. We go for dinner? The babysitter cancels and the kids are in tow. Or not, and we spend enough on one meal to buy groceries for a week.

On the plus side, our anniversary is just three days AFTER Valentine’s day, so we buy all the discounted chocolate to give to each other. mmmmm. Chocolate.

My birthday is just before Valentine’s Day so my hubby always lumps it all together. And we never really do anything special cos of the kids, and he’s usually working. So to me, Valentine’s Day is very ehhhh…

Nobody I know goes out to a fancy dinner and gets a little black box full of diamonds. Who does that stuff?

    Love that pic. ;)

I think it’s true, V day can suck for both single and couples. A couple has so much pressure and expectations (especially a new one!)

I’m single and I just ignore the day. How lame is it that someone has to tell us to be romantic on a day?

I mean, I may celebrate it when I’m in a relationship, but if I do, we’ll celebrate it like 5 days after. That way we can hit the clearance racks and roses will get back out of the bend-me-over price range.

Wait till you see the VD (yes that’s what I call it because it’s a wallet-sucking disease) story I have for you ladies……

I”m just buying for the boys otherwise I don’t mind it so much being single-not after ten years…..and an ex who NEVER remembered major hoidays.

It’s not a big deal around here. Emma’s bday is the 15th and usually we’re broke, so what we have gets spent on her lol.

Oh Crystal, that picture’s terrible. lol

Well, sadly for me, this is the first Valentines I’ve been single for in over 20 years, so any suggestions on getting through this lovely day are greatly appreciated.

Valentine’s Day is my anniversary. (Yes, yes, sap and all.) That said, we don’t usually do anything. We have a little bell that we got on the day and we ring that to celebrate the years, but other’n'at, we might have dinner, might see a movie.

Might just flop on each other and read. ;)
