Wake up calls and comfort zones

By Loribelle Hunt | February 9, 2007

Interesting week here on TNG. Monday, Cryastal made me go back through my personal blog posts and check to see if I’d said anything truly insulting about anyone I care to insult. Tuesday, Shelli had me thinking about my prefered writing length and why it is prefered. Wednesday, Sara made me wonder why I struggle so much transitioning betweeen full lenght and novella.

And then a very interesting thing happened Wed. night. Army Guy asked what I planned on working on that night. I answered that I’m working on an historical for the Stroke of Midnight and he was shocked. That’s not what you write, he said. How to respond? On the one hand, I really appreciate that this man knows me well enough to know what I write. On the other, I resent the hell out of the implication I can’t write something else! He does know me really well and I wonder if he’d seen my insecurity at this point? My wondering if I could pull off this historical thing.

It doesn’t really matter what his intentions were at this point. All I heard was challenge and after a week of questioning what my comfort zone is, well let’s just say that’s all I needed lol.

So. Y’all think I can write an historical? How about you? Is there a genre you thought you’d never try? If so, how did it go?

I Never thought I’d write a paranormal! And the one I’m working on I just love. I never thought I’d write a mystery either and I learned it’ll be a long time before i do it again LOL

Erotic romance. Never thought I’d be able to pull it off and I’ve managed quite well, thank you. :)

I swore I’d never do a shifter or sci fi. Did the shifter, working on the sci fi, and can’t wait to do a historical.

I totally know you can pull this off, Lori. Why? Cause you’re THE LORIBELLE! You kick ass at whatever you write :D

    I never thought I’d write romance ;)

Or sci-fi. It requires a tightness of writing I’m absolutely pathetic with.

    Historical-fantasy, yes. Historical, no. :)
