I’m an addict

By Shelli Stevens | January 30, 2007

I need to make the confession now. I’m an addict. I can’t live without it. I’m irritable, I’m on the edge, I’m fidgety. I haven’t even gone twelve hours without it, and I’m already at breaking point. I need it… I. Need. My. Laptop.

Seriously, I don’t think we ever realize how attached we get to those things. At least, in my case anyway. I used to be a desktop girl. I’d faithfully jump in the chair, sit up straight, and type away for two hours on my story. But since I became a laptop girl, everything’s changed. I can’t commit. I can’t sit in one chair for such a long period of time. I need to be able to scoop it up and move from the couch, to the table, to my bed. To curl up in the oversized recliner with my laptop on my lap while I watch the news. And I can’t do any of this now.

As I type this now, I sit behind a desk and I find myself squirming in the chair. Annoyed by the loud clicking of the keys, and having to reach over and–the horror of it all–use a mouse! But here I am. Because my laptop has once again decided to keel over on me. Literally. I need viagra for my monitor. It’s gone limp, just kind of falls flat and doesn’t stay up no matter how dirty I type on it. I sent it off this morning, because thank God it’s still under warranty.

But how long? How long can I live like this? Waiting for Emma to fall asleep, so I can sneak out off to the cold, isolated room with the desktop. Where my butt is wedged into the cracks of the plastic lawn chair I’m sitting on, and my legs are forced straight out in front of me. How in the heck am I supposed to be creative like this? I have a very bad feeling I’ll not be writing very much this week.

So is anyone else like this? Have this laptop addiction? Or are there some of you still out there who are sitting happily in front of a desktop?

I love my laptop but I’m ready for a new desktop. Matter of fact, I just bought a new desk, and I have a regular keyboard bec. I can’t stand the laptop keyboard, that I plug into my laptop. I’m so excited to have a desk to work at again so I can get away from the kids, but then, my kids aren’t little and don’t need constant supervision (though occasionally I think it wouldn’t hurt LOL)

Awwwe! Poor Shell! I share your addiction. I can’t imagine life without Lila the laptop. Yes, I’ve named my laptop.

Weeeeeellll, I’d say I hate the desktop, but I’m afraid I’ll need it one day, so I don’t want to talk trash about it. I can definitely relate to the laptop addiction, though. I hate to leave the house without mine, even when I don’t think I’ll have a chance to use it. Mr. Robin uses it when I’m gone and I live in fear that he’ll let it catch some funky virus at a porn site. (If he does and it dies, he’s TOTALLY buying me a brand new one and will NEVER be allowed to touch it!)

Honey, you’ve had this lap top for 3 seconds and it’s broken once for each of those seconds.

    Buy. A. New. One.

My laptop is ancient and slow, so I use my desktop. I’d *like* to get a shiny laptop. Then I could write anywhere.

Ah you guys! I miss you! Twenty-four hours without the internet already. BUT I got an email from HP that was a shipping notification. *Biting nails, hoping desperately it’s coming* I know, I need to make peace with the desktop.

I use a desktop at work and a laptop at home. I think I like the desktop more, because I have a cool dual monitor so I can have email or Divas open on one screen and whatever I’m working on open on the other.

Wow…that’s cool Amanda. I used to have a laptop that I took everywhere until it crashed and burned. Haven’t replaced it yet though. My husband has one…but he takes it with him everywhere. I don’t mind the desktop. As long as I can get the Internet…I’m cool.

Superhubby and I are debating the merits of bringing yet-another computer into the house. My son seems to think the computer is for his gaming needs, despite the playstation, PS2 and gamecube we own, not to mention his gameboy. However, he’s getting to the age where it’d be good for him to use the ‘net for research, especially as he’s showing an interest in researching stories he wants to write…how could Isay no?

However. I’m extreeeeeeeeemely protective of my computer. it’s MINE. Not ours. Not even ‘mine and hubby’s’. MINE. Hubby has a laptop for work, and he uses it or nothing.

However…I have an oldold laptop which is nothing more than a lightweight word processor (can’t get the ‘net on it, and the power-cord is tempermental.) It’s great to sit on the couch like I’m part of the family and type on that thing…so hubby’s talking about getting a new laptop so we can share it. And the desktop will become joint-property. I dunno about that part.
