You really have to wonder if RWA waited to do this one when they knew so many would be out of town? I’m talking about “the letter” which you can see at HelenKay Dimon’s blog. Now I saw this a few days ago at PI before everyone left for Atlanta, but most ppl hadn’t received the August RWR yet. Now there is also a discussion on RD about it.
I think people are upset on two fronts here.
One, who says people in m/m or f/f relationships aren’t moral upstanding Americans?
And two, wtf gets to decide what a “good” woman or family is?
Because according to this letter it is,
“college-educated, married, middle-class, monogamous, and moral”
Wow. The hell with who might actually be the largest buying block of romances, huh? Cause I know a lot of women who read these books. And they are so not that demographic. Which naturally makes me curious. Do you meet the June Cleaver demographic? Do you feel you represent that demographic? Or do you fall somewhere in between? Do tell. *grin* We are always interested in what our readers are interested in and maybe where the fall in the statistics will help us out lol!

I’m off to Atlanta tomorrow! I’ll try to blog either here or at my blog tomorrow or Friday. Y’all have a great week!!

um…University graduate and now-married mother of three, living off hubby’s middle-class paycheck. Born to a Canadian-Southern-Baptist minister…
First son born out of wedlock (not current hubby no-less!) University degree still sitting (unopened) in the box it came in…average pay (when I worked) after day-care $1/hour. Oh…spiritualist with pagan tendencies.
You should have had that question on the Novely Girls application questionnaire

When I started reading romances, I was single, middle-class, living at home with my parents. Still reading romance, I got married, then divorced. After that, I had a child out of wedlock, then married, had two more kids, got my college degree during second marriage. Still middle-class. I write erotic romance. I’m all across the freaking board, so WTF?

OK, let’s see.
College-educated: check
Married: check (just over two years, but I was reading romance long before that)
Middle class: check
Monogamous: check (but guess what, I was reading romance long before I got into a monogamous committed relationship)
Moral: I’d like to think so, but who can REALLY say what this means? By moral does she mean “Christian”? I think that’s her code word. Well, I was raised Catholic but now I’m basically non-practicing, although I’m spiritual and try to be a good person. I have strong moral beliefs, but I doubt that all my beliefs are hers (in fact, I know many are not). I consider myself moral, though.
Anyway, looks like I fit her target demographic on paper. Oops, guess I don’t, because I’m a huge card-carrying liberal who believes that all loving committed relationships should be applauded and nurtured, regardless of the gender of the partners.
