So, I was on the phone with Loribelle for like two freaking hours yesterday and we talked about goodness knows what, but you get two chatty chicks on the phone and they don’t shut up. Ev-er.
Among the gadzillion things we talked about included the present and future prospects of were-wolf/bear/dragon/rabbit stories and I got to thinking about my own writing and what I have in store. Personally, I think werewolves and vampires are so overdone. My Wereplanets series has bears, dragons, tigers, and merpeople, but no wolves. Tiiiired of the werewolves. And vampires. They’ve been done every which way they can be. Scary, suspenseful, funny, sexy, uncivilized, suave. Blech! HOWEVER, both Lori and I have werewolf and/or vamp stories coming up. Yeah, writers don’t make sense, just go with it.
Soooo, this begs a question. What does everybody think? Werewolves: still hot or overdone? And do you throw other wereanimals into the same category or a seperate one? What about vampires?

hrm.
Personally? I’m done with vampires, though I have a couple stories I wrote ages ago that I’d like to revive. I think I’ll tweak them though, to be futuristics or fantasies…so it’d be a vampire/something story.
Werewolves…dunno…like ‘em, have read a couple done well, and they *sound* really good…but…other were-creatures seem to have more possibility.
Yeah, okay, I took the long way around, but I guess my opinion is that, yeah, they’re both overdone. But it won’t stop me writing them if I have an idea. lol

See I’m JUST testing my feet into the vamp market. And I’ll probably try a wolf at sometime. But I do think the market is getting saturated with the stuff. But obviously people are buying. Look at Lori’s sales on the wolf book

Well, since I only got into paranormal a couple of years ago, I’m not a real good judge. However, I have seen a lot of vampire/werewolf stories and I’ve only read a few that have been exceptionally done. I believe if a writer can find a way to make her vampire/werewolf unique..then go for it. But don’t do something someone else has already done.

I agree on the market being glutted (o course I can’t write paranormal so there). But I agree w/Lyric on the unique angle too.

I love werewolves and vampires, so I have to say nope, not overdone. I will never stop reading/buying them
But there are a lot of great shape-shifter stories out there still to be written.

I have a couple three shifter stories out or in progress, and more planned. I still think werewolves are hot, but I’ve got dragons and some coyotes too. And a series planned with werecats.
So maybe the wolves will have to move over a little bit.

Yeah, except for the very well done vamp/werewolf I think I may be done with them. I’ve always liked werewolves better (probably why I write them), but I think I’m ready for different shifters now.
